Natalie, The Slacker is an amazing race. As to the fall in elevation, that depends on the race that you want to run. There is the 4 mile and the half-marathon.
The Slacker is the first half-marathon that I ever ran. There is a 1,000 foot drop in elevation over that 13 miles. But it isn't really that much per mile. I found that it was more of a challenge when you hit the few "Bumps" that took you back up in elevation.
You can train for the race and the conditions. You might want to read a recent article from Runner's World - http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263-264-13100-0,00.html
Beware, though... The very worst part of the race (either one) is the final half-mile as it is a gentle rise in elevation to the finish line!
I do not think that I will run it this year, but I am still considering running the Geargetow to Idaho Springs half-marathon (similar, but lower in elevation).
